Junior AECG established at Narooma High School

We nominated students from Narooma High School to undertake leadership roles throughout our school as part of our Junior AECG – roles such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary and Treasurer.

Here are our new Junior AECG representatives for 2016:

Junior AECG

Junior AECG members are made up of Aboriginal youth between the ages of 11 and 18, who can join the AECG as junior members and can then establish their own committee as a subcommittee to a Local AECG. Junior AECGs provide advice and ideas that they have, rather than parents and elders telling young people what they want. The NSW Junior AECG’s structure provides leadership opportunities for youth to lobby for what they want and how they want it done.

As Junior AECG members, young people are:

  • given a chance to provide input and ideas on issues relating to Aboriginal education and local events in their school or town
  • given a chance to develop important leadership, communication, and public speaking skills
  • given a voice and a way to express their opinions and perspectives
  • empowered to speak about youth topics and issues they face
  • able to engage in education and their local community.

The Junior AECG is open to all Aboriginal students in Years 6–12 and its aims are to:

  • promote improvement in school (in conjunction with the school SRC)
  • empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through real and active participation in school decision making
  • provide a forum for Aboriginal students
  • promote Aboriginal Education
  • promote ‘school spirit’.

Support members include the school principal, the AEA, Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers (DET), teachers, Aboriginal Education Consultants and members of the SRC. Membership may be terminated when enrolment ends.
